Adolescents face psychological influences and social challenges to be smart money-users, while at the same time dealing with the temptations of consumer spending, a result of marketing and advertising campaigns specifically targeted at them.
talks about young executives…
For the yuppie (those in their 20s and 30s), starting out in your career and finally making your own money seems to be the path to living a fun and exciting lifestyle.
However, there are challenges ahead, from securing a job that you like and pays well, to handling the many ways that you can spend more money (on material goods, eating out, entertainment, etc) than you can save, and coping with peer pressure that forces you to live up to certain expectations.
What shapes your financial behaviour?
How you were brought up and your experiences during your childhood and adolescence can affect your spending behaviour.
Each of us can be conditioned by the information we receive from – and the experiences we have with – the people around us, whether they are our parents, teachers, caregivers, relatives, friends, or colleagues.
Even the environment around us play a role; mass media like television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet can provide us with a varied array of information and experiences that can condition us.
Psychologists have found that over time, this conditioning will lead us to develop either a positive or negative self-regard.
We appreciate ourselves only when we meet with the standards others apply to us, rather than when we truly actualise our personal potential. As a result, when we find ourselves unable to meet those standards, our self-esteem suffers. What will happen then?
We could end up spending money to boost our self-esteem, to the point of developing an overspending behaviour. Or it could lead to addictive habitual behaviours such as drinking, gambling, smoking or impulsive shopping.
To learn some of the skills and techniques to manage your money better, you can read some of the real stories of individuals, and learn from the mistakes they made. |
